Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is an on-site production system that mainly uses a heat engine to produce electricity and thermal heating such as steam or hot water. The heat energy that is otherwise wasted in conventional systems, such as grid-supplied electricity and on-site boiler, is utilized for the purpose of cooling, for heating large commercial spaces, and in a variety of domestic hot water and industrial processes. Most common types of heat engines used in CHP systems include external combustion engines (ECE), internal combustion engines (ICE), and reciprocating engines. Installed close to the end consumers, power generation units using CHP technologies reap numerous benefits due to significant reduction in distribution and transportation losses. Driven by these benefits, CHP systems are gaining wide adoption in various developed and developing regions to achieve efficiencies of over 80%, much higher than those of conventional technologies. Gas-based cogeneration systems are gaining prominence in captive power plants with abundant supply of gas. A variety of fuels can be used for CHP equipment such as biogas, coal gas, and natural gas.
